TitleOcular Pyogenic Granuloma in Congolese patients
PurposePurpose: To determine the frequency of Pyogenic Granuloma (PG) in the population of Congolese patients.
MethodsMethods. We performed a retrospective cross-sectional and descriptive analysis of the data collected between January 2005 and August 2016 from patients diagnosed with PG, in an outpatient eye clinic, a general ophthalmology practice. The diagnosis of ocular PG was based on clinical presentation with confirmation by histologic examination in most of cases.
ResultsResults. Out of 17469 patients seen during the study period, 21 patients (21 eyes) were diagnosed with PG, for a frequency of 0.12%. The mean age of the patients with PG was 31 years (range, 4 to 60 years). Male were more frequently diagnosed with PG than female (67% vs. 33%) with the male-to-female ratio of 2:1. Delay of diagnosis was 52 days (range, 3 to 360 days). All PGs were unilateral, 13 (62%) in the right eye and 8 (38%) in the left eye. The main chief complaint was swelling at presentation. PG was associated with history of trauma (4 eyes), pterygium surgery (4 eyes), curettage of chalazion (one eye) and use of Mitomycin eyedrops (one eye). Most of PGs were nodular, pedunculated or sessile, measuring approximately 0.7 cm x 1.2 cm. PG involved the bulbar conjunctiva in 11 eyes (nasal side, in 10 eyes; temporal side, in one eye) and the palpebral conjunctiva in 10 eyes (upper eyelid, one eye; lower eyelid, 9 eyes). In 17 patients (81%), PG was successful removed by simple excision.
ConclusionConclusion. The frequency of PG is low in this study. Male were more diagnosed with PG than female.
