Title | Risk factors for open angle glaucoma: a case control study. |
Purpose | Glaucoma is the leading of irreversible blindness worldwide. Age and intraocular pressure are the two most important risk factors for the development and progression of open angle glaucoma. Decades of clinical research has confirmed that age and intraocular pressure (IOP) are the most consistently identified risk factors for the development and progression of glaucoma. << |
Methods | A case control study, performed during one year period at the Department of ophthalmology, University of Kinshasa. We identified 100 patients (cases) with OAG and 100 controls. A comparison of ocular factors and systemic factors between cases and controls was performed. The cases were all patients with OAG diagnosed during the study period. Controls were recruited from accompanying patients. Risk factors were identified and included age, sex, hypertension, diabetes, body mass index, elevated intraocular pressure, myopia and family history of OAG. |
Results | The results indicated that age (Odd ratios (OD) = 3.54 (95% Confidence Interval (CI) 1.84 – 6.81, P = 0.001), male sex ((OR = 2.68 (1.51 – 4.76, P = 0.001)) , body mass index (OR = 3.91, 95% CI 1.4 – 12.32, P < 0.002), family history of glaucoma (OR = 4.06, 95%CI, 0.01 – 8.25, P < 0.01) were associated with increased risk of OAG. |
Conclusion | The findings of this study confirm those risk factors for glaucoma previously reported . Conclusion: Identifying OAG risk factors in our population will improve glaucoma screening. |
