Title | Functional results and safety profile of idiopathic full-thickness macular hole surgery using sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) 25% in comparison with SF6 40%. |
Purpose | In this work, we demonstrate the equivalence in terms of near best-corrected visual acuity (nBCVA) with sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) tamponade at different concentrations (25% vs 40%) during the surgical treatment of idiopathic macular hole. |
Methods | We produced a retrospective monocentric consecutive case series with a historical cut-off. 24 eyes were operated, 11 of them received SF6 40% and 13 eyes received SF6 25% as gas tamponade at the end of the surgery. The follow-up period was 6 months. The primary outcome is the equivalence in terms of nBCVA at 6 months follow up. Secondary outcomes included macular atrophy, the rapidity of visual recovery and the intraocular pressure (IOP) during the early postoperative period. Only patients with idiopathic macular hole without trauma or prior vitreoretinal surgery were selected. Small, medium, and large macular holes were included. No other exclusion criteria were applied. |
Results | Mean nBCVA was equivalent between both groups at 6 months follow up using Wilcoxon test. Mean postoperative nBCVA was 0,766 +/- 0,284022. There is no difference in macular atrophy (p=0,387). The difference in terms of BCVA is very significative in favor of SF6 25% group at 1 week follow-up (p=0,00003314). During the early postoperative period, we didn’t observe a significant difference in terms of IOP. |
Conclusion | To the best of our knowledge, this is the first published study which compares the efficacy of SF6 25% vs 40%. We demonstrate an equivalence in terms of functional result at 6 months follow up. This work also demonstrates that using SF6 at 40% concentration is safe if a longer tamponading period is wished. |
