Title | IOP measured by non-contact tonometry and age and gender in Congolese patients |
Purpose | To examine the relationship between IOP measured by non-contact tonometry and age and gender in Congolese patients. |
Methods | It was a cross-sectional study performed at an eye clinic in Kinshasa during the months of October, November and December 2022. All patients seen during the study period underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination, including inspection of adnexa, measurement of visual acuity, refraction, slit-lamp examination, funduscopy and measurement of intraocular pressure with a non-contact tonometry. Were excluded from the study, patients with glaucoma, anterior uveitis, trauma, corneal disease, retinal detachment. |
Results | A total of 253 patients were enrolled in the study. There were 107 (42.29% ) male and 146 (57.71% ) female, sex ratio being 1.0/1.36. The mean age+/- of patients was 50.33 years+/-16 (range, 11 to 89 years ). Mean IOP was 16.27 (RE) in female, and 16.52 (LE) mmHg in male. Mean IOP was 16.37 mmHg (RE) and 16.50 (LE) (P > 0.05). The distribution of patients by age groups did not show any difference in the mean IOP. |
Conclusion | This preliminary study found a mean IOP of 16.37 in RE and 16.50 in LE; the study did not find a correlation between IOP and age; it did also not find a correlation between gender and IOP. Further studies with a large series are needed. |
