TitleIOP measured by non-contact tonometry and age and gender in Congolese patients
PurposeTo examine the relationship between IOP measured by non-contact tonometry and age and gender in Congolese patients.
MethodsIt was a cross-sectional study performed at an eye clinic in Kinshasa during the months of October, November and December 2022. All patients seen during the study period underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination, including inspection of adnexa, measurement of visual acuity, refraction, slit-lamp examination, funduscopy and measurement of intraocular pressure with a non-contact tonometry. Were excluded from the study, patients with glaucoma, anterior uveitis, trauma, corneal disease, retinal detachment.
ResultsA total of 253 patients were enrolled in the study. There were 107 (42.29% ) male and 146 (57.71% ) female, sex ratio being 1.0/1.36. The mean age+/- of patients was 50.33 years+/-16 (range, 11 to 89 years ). Mean IOP was 16.27 (RE) in female, and 16.52 (LE) mmHg in male. Mean IOP was 16.37 mmHg (RE) and 16.50 (LE) (P > 0.05). The distribution of patients by age groups did not show any difference in the mean IOP.
ConclusionThis preliminary study found a mean IOP of 16.37 in RE and 16.50 in LE; the study did not find a correlation between IOP and age; it did also not find a correlation between gender and IOP. Further studies with a large series are needed.
