Title | Ocular manifestations in patients with oculocutaneous albinism in Kinshasa. |
Purpose | Objective: To determine ocular manifestations in patents with oculocutaneous albinism. |
Methods | A prospective cross-sectional study performed between July 2013 and July 2014 at the Department of ophthalmology, University of Kinshasa. During the study period patients with oculocutaneous albinism referred from the Department of Dermatology were included. Patients underwent a complete ophthalmologic examination, including interview, inspection of the adnexa, refraction, slit lamp examination, dilated fundoscopy and color vision test. Data were collected on medical, best corrected VA, refractive errors, nystagmus, biomicroscopy of the anterior segment, dilated fundus examination. Spectral-domain OCT and visual evoked potential recordings were not performed. |
Results | There were 47 patients with oculocutaneous albinism with a mean age +/-SD of 20.8 years+/-9.6 (range, 7 to 49 years). There were 66% of female and 44% of male; the sex ratio being 1.9:1. Patents originated from Kasai (Oriental and Occidental regions) were 18 patients (38.3%), followed by those from Kongo Central (19.1%). Symptoms showed reduced visual acuity (68.4%), nystagmus (100%), strabismus (43%), torticollis (25%), iris transillumination (80%), absence or reduction of melanin pigment (100%) in the fundi. The type of nystagmus was most pendular and horizontal. Transillumination was seen in 76.6% of patients, hypoplasia of the macula in 100% of patients. Myopic astigmatism was the most refractive errors found. |
Conclusion | The study shows a high frequency of patients with oculocutaneous albinism from Kasai (Occidental and Oriental). It also confirms the findings of previous studies |
