TitreRetinal Hazards in Racket Sports Practice: a systematic review
ButTo describe the extent and the typology of retinal injuries related to racket sports practice. To our knowledge, this is the first investigation of posterior pole injuries within a group of disciplines that are both globally popular and rapidly expanding.
MéthodesIn accordance with PRISMA guidelines, we queried PubMed and Web of Science databases using an exhaustive search string to identify all relevant publications on ocular injuries sustained during racket sports. We included original research articles reporting retinal manifestations resulting from racket sports practice. Reviews, grey literature, retracted articles, and papers in languages other than English or French were excluded. Articles were evaluated and ranked, and data were extracted using an a priori defined strategy. No publication date restrictions were applied. The study protocol was registered within PROSPERO prior to initiation of the review.
RésultatsOur analysis identified 36 articles, among which 22 case reports/series, 11 retrospective cohorts and 3 prospective cohorts. Tennis was the most frequently represented sport in our dataset, which included tennis, badminton, padel, pickleball, squash, racquetball, and table tennis. The most frequent retinal insult described in the dataset was traumatic chorioretinopathy or commotio retinae. Retinal breaks, holes and dialysis were the second most frequent retinal injuries followed by retinal detachment.
ConclusionRacket sports-related ocular injuries can have severe consequences, and vision-threatening injuries are not uncommon. Patients presenting with ocular injuries sustained in this context should undergo a thorough ophthalmic examination, including a dilated fundus examination with assessment of the retinal periphery. As these sports suffer from a lack of regulations regarding ocular protection, we believe this study provides valuable insights into the retinal risks associated with racket sports and advocate for the use protective eyewear.
