Titel | Uveal melanoma biopsy : relevance and safety profile. |
Doel | To study the safety profile of the trans-vitreal and trans-scleral biopsy technique and to determine the relevance of genetic analysis of tumoral tissue while counselling patients with uveal melanoma. |
Methodes | Retrospective analysis of patients who underwent tumoral biopsy while being treated for uveal melanoma with brachytherapy at Ocular Oncology Unit, Cliniques Universitaires Saint-Luc, between Jan 2022 and Jul 2024. |
Resultaten | A total of 98 patients had undergone an intraocular biopsy at our center between Jan 2022 and Jul 2024 : 73 were harvested during brachytherapy for uveal melanoma in order to assess individual risk for metastases based on genetic profiling of the tumour. Out of the 73 biopsies, 3 (4%) came out not contributory because of insufficient material : all of them were harvested in lesions of less than 2.5mm of thickness. Genetic analysis could be obtained in 69 patients. 80% of specimens were diagnosed as carrying a low risk of metastasis. 15 patients (20%) had monosomie 3, which prompted a more intense follow up of the liver and lungs. As for complications, one patient developed subretinal macular haemorrhage and 2 retinal detachment. All were managed surgically. |
Conclusie | Tumoral biopsy is a valuable tool in the management of uveal melanoma patients. The good rate of return and acceptable safety profile make it more and more desirable, especially in light of upcoming adjuvant treatments for the high risk patients. |
