TitreComparison of Retinal Straylight in Monofocal and Partial Range of Field Intraocular Lenses: a Systematic Review
ButThis review aims to evaluate and compare the degree of retinal straylight—an optical phenomenon that can impair visual performance—between two types of intraocular lenses (IOL): monofocal and partial range of field (ProF), following cataract surgery. With the rising demand for spectacle independence without compromising optical quality, ProF IOLs have gained popularity in recent years. However, retinal straylight, which is associated with visual disturbances such as glare, hazy vision and diminished contrast sensitivity, must be carefully considered when selecting premium IOLs. Assessing how different IOL designs influence retinal straylight can guide clinicians in making informed choices for their patients.
MéthodesA comprehensive literature review was conducted using PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase and Scopus. The search query included combinations of keywords such as EDOF, IOL, and retinal straylight.
RésultatsPrevious research has frequently compared straylight levels between monofocal and multifocal IOLs, as well as between diffractive and refractive multifocal IOLs, consistently showing that monofocal IOLs produce less straylight and glare than their multifocal counterparts. However, despite the growing use of ProF IOLs, only one ongoing clinical trial out of 56 query results was identified that specifically investigates retinal straylight in patients with ProF versus monofocal IOLs. This suggests a significant gap in the literature regarding the evaluation of straylight in ProF IOLs.
ConclusionTo date, no completed studies have directly compared retinal straylight between monofocal and ProF IOLs. Future studies on straylight in ProF IOLs are essential to ensure that patients receive the most appropriate lens choice to match their lifestyle needs.
