Titre | Topical insulin for ocular surface restoration |
But | To summarize the currently available literature on topical insulin which is emerging as a new treatment option for ocular surface diseases. In addition, we will present the first results from a retrospective study, in which we aim to evaluate the effect of topical insulin treatment on ocular surface restoration in patients from the ophthalmology department of the University Hospital of Brussels (UZB). |
Méthodes | A literature research was conducted in PubMed. Additionally, a search was made on ClinicalTrials.gov to discover up-to-date information on clinical research studies and their results published until August 31, 2024. Cases treated with topical insulin at the UZB within the period of October 2023 to August 2024, will be retrospectively evaluated. The primary objective of the study is to assess the effect of topical insulin for the treatment of ocular surface disease with treatment success defined as subsiding of clinical symptoms that allows to discontinue topical insulin treatment and without the need for any alternative treatment options. |
Résultats | Treatment with topical insulin has been reported in the literature for a range of ocular surface disorders ranging from neurotrophic keratopathy to chemical burns, infectious keratitis and bullous keratopathy. The majorities of the studies were small case series and retrospective cohort studies that reported in general high rates of treatment success. Results of our retrospective case series will be compared to reported literature data. |
Conclusion | Topical insulin has been reported to be a safe and cost-effective treatment option for ocular surface disorders with a promising effect on epithelial wound healing. |
