TitreA randomised trial of adjustable glasses, ready-made glasses and standard glasses among Chinese school children
Abstract Nr.3007
ButThe primary objective of this study was to determine the rates of wear between standard, ready-made and adjustable glasses. Secondary objectives were students’ satisfaction with study glasses and power stability of adjustable glasses.
MéthodesThis open-label, non-inferiority randomised trial included 120 classes of 14 junior high schools in Guangdong, China. Students with presenting visual acuity ≤6/12 in either eye, correctable to at least 6/7.5 with subjective were eligible and individually randomised to either standard glasses, ready-made glasses or adjustable glasses for 2 months. The main outcome was wear rates of glasses assessed by unannounced inspection. Study glasses were measured using manual lensometry at the start and the end of the trial period and a test-retest study to assess repeatability was conducted.
RésultatsAmong 379 children, 33.5% received standard glasses, 33.0% ready-made glasses and 33.5% adjustable glasses. The proportion of those wearing glasses was not significantly different between the standard glasses (44.1%) and adjustable glasses group (33.9%) (p=0.095), nor were there any significant differences in satisfaction scores. The power of adjustable glasses was unstable although intra/inter-observer repeatability was found to be poor.
ConclusionAdjustable glasses are an acceptable method of tackling uncorrected or inadequately corrected refractive errors in this setting.
