Titre | Non-Hodgkin lymphomas of the orbit and the ocular adnexa |
Abstract Nr. | A2042 |
But | Non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) of the orbit and the ocular adnexa are rare. They represent approximately 10% of all orbital and extra-ocular tumours and only 1% of all systemic NHL. The most common type of NHL in the orbit is MALT (Mucosa Associated Lymphoid Tissue Lymphoma), a low-grade B-cell lymphoma, first described in the stomach by Isaacson and Wright in 1983. Extranodal low-grade lymphomas are sometimes difficult to distinguish from reactive lymphoid proliferations. Fluorescent in situ hybridisation (FISH) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) which detect clonal rearrangements of the immunoglobulin heavy chain are necessary to demonstrate the neoplastic nature of the lymphoid cells. |
Méthodes | We performed a retrospective analysis of the clinical and histopathological files of 68 patients, diagnosed with lymphoma or reactive lymphoid hyperplasia in the eye departement of the Ghent university hospital, between 1956 and 2003. All lymphoma were histologically reviewed and classified according to the World Health Organisation classification of hematopoetic tumors. Clinical and follow-up data were collected. |
Résultats | The results of this study will be presented together with a review of the literature on reactive proliferations and NHL of the ocular adnexa |
