TitelFrom Intramural to Extramural Lenssurgery: Why, How and What, Four Years Later
DoelThe need for patient-centred care and workflow optimisation have driven me towards extramural care. This abstract provides an overview on Why, How and What of this transition.
MethodesBesides the logistical, operational and administrative adjustments in conjunction with the organisation, the surgeon has played a crucial role in optimising this transition. We focuse on the impact of surgeon leadership on this change by defining clear standards of care, streamlining processes and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
By leveraging their clinical expertise and providing strategic leadership for both care teams and administrative processes, surgeons contribute not only to improved patient outcomes, more efficient communication between care providers, administration and patients but also to a more satisfying work culture for staff who are also involved in optimising workflow.
ResultatenMinimal invasive techniques and faster post-operative recovery allowed more procedures to be performed outside the hospital. Patients feel an improved experience thanks to reduced waiting times, a permanent team of healthcare providers following them during their consultation and surgical journey, the calming effect of an extramural care centre, the administrative relief provided by the organisation. It improved team cohesion and job satisfaction through more efficient communication and division of tasks, resulting in more focus on the quality of care and thus higher quality.
ConclusieThe shift from inpatient to outpatient surgery has brought significant benefits in terms of efficiency, patient experience and a working culture with a high degree of team cohesion. The method is reproducible so new surgeons need little adjustment time. Challenges also remain en will be discussed.
