TitelImpact of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty: fellow eye involvement and the impact of lens status
DoelTo evaluate the impact of Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty on intraocular pressure reduction in both treated and fellow eyes, as well as the impact of lens condition and prior posterior capsulotomy.
MethodesA retrospective chart review was conducted on 71 patients who underwent unilateral SLT between the 1st January of 2022 and the 31st December of 2024. It included 42 pseudophakic patients (17 with prior capsulotomy) and 29 phakic patients. the intraocular pressure was measured at follow-up intervals of 3 ,7, 12, 23 and 30 weeks post-SLT. The IOP reduction was compared between treated and fellow eyes and across different subgroups, i.e. phakic versus pseudophakic eyes and capsulotomy versus non-capsulotomy patients.
ResultatenSLT resulted in significant IOP reductions in both treated and fellow eyes, regardless of lens status or posterior capsule condition, up until the last follow-up (p < 0.001). Pseudophakic eyes exhibited faster and more substantial IOP reductions compared to phakic eyes, particularly at 7 and 17 weeks. Differences between phakic and pseudophakic eyes diminished over time, with similar stabilization observed at later follow-ups. Capsulotomy had minimal effect on IOP reduction and demonstrated slightly better consistency in IOP reduction over time.
ConclusiePseudophakic patients tend to experience faster IOP reductions following SLT, but long-term outcomes are similar across lens statuses. Importantly, the fellow eye also experiences significant IOP reduction, highlighting a systemic effect of SLT that is independent of lens status. SLT remains effective across diverse patient populations, and follow-up strategies could be tailored based on lens status for optimal clinical outcomes.
