Titel | Investigating peripapillary vessel density on OCT angiography after instillation of topical Brimonidine versus Dorzolamide |
Doel | To assess the changes in the superficial peripapillary retinal vessel density (SVD) and deep vessel density (DVD) after administration of topical Carbonic Anhydrase inhibitor Dorzolamide and alpha-2 agonist Brimonidine using Optovue Solix Optical Coherence Tomography angiography (OCTA) |
Methodes | This is a prospective, randomized, trial. A total of 13 healthy individuals with no previous ophthalmological history were included. All the participants had their refractive parameters, Intraocular pressure (IOP), Central Corneal Thickness (CCT) and OCTA measured. A computer-assisted randomization was used to determine which eye received one drop of Brimonidine, and which would receive one drop of Dorzolamide. The IOP and OCTA was measured after an onset of 2 hours after topical administration. All interpreted OCT scans had a minimal Quality Index (QI) of 7. |
Resultaten | The IOP following the administration of Brimonidine decreased from 15.3±2.9 mmHg to 10.3±2.0 mmHg after Dorzolamide the IOP decreased from 14.9±2.6 to 11.5±2.7 mmHg. The superficial vessel density did not show any significant changes after the administration of Brimonidine although there was a slight non-significant decrease in deep vessel intensity. However, the values of Superficial vessel density and Deep vessel density decreased (p<0.05) after the installation of one drop of Dorzolamide. |
Conclusie | Both Brimonidine and Dorzolamide have shown neuroprotective benefits in glaucoma patients, possibly by mediating ocular hemodynamics. This study demonstrated that Dorzolamide decreases the Superficial and deep vessel density of the optic nerve head even though IOP significantly decreased, which is contrary to previous findings. |
