TitelAdjuvant treatment of Conjunctival Melanoma with Ruthenium brachytherapy
DoelIt has previously been shown that conjunctival melanomas are highly recurrent, and that the number of recurrences can be significantly reduced by irradiation. Sinds 2018 bulbar conjunctival melanomas are treated with 100 Gy Ruthenium brachytherapy.
MethodesReview of the conjunctival melanomas treated with Ruthenium brachytherapy. (2018 - 2022)
ResultatenIn four years 17 conjunctival melanomas were treated, with a sole treatment of Ruthenium brachytherapy of 100Gy, measured at 1 mm deepness, after surgical removal of the tumor. In 2 patients there were recurrences, both patients with previous multifocal conjunctival melanoma. One patient died during the examination period of unrelated causes, and one of melanoma. One patient has periferal metastases. In 2 patients additional regional lymph node surgery was performed. Complications are dry eye and limbus insufficiency (in one patient who had also undergone proton therapy). There were no sceral problems.
ConclusieRuthenium brachytherapy is a save procedure for the adjuvant treatment of conjunctival melanomas.
