Titel[ RECORDED ] Subconjunctival venous malformation with progressive hemorrhage in a child with the blue rubber bleb nevus (BRBNS) syndrome on treatment with oral propranolol
DoelTo report the first case in literature of a child with the BRBNS with a subconjunctival venous malformation with progressive hemorrhage necessitating topical treatment in addition to oral propranolol.
MethodesCase report and literature review on PubMed by choosing the following
MeSH terms: blue rubber bleb nevus syndrome- eye-treatment.
ResultatenA 3-year-old boy with BRBNS on treatment with oral propranolol, presented at our emergency department with a subconjunctival hemorrhage in the left eye. Mother noticed a small red punctiform lesion ten days before, suggestive of a new vascular lesion. At first, no additional treatment to the oral propranolol was initiated but 3 days later he was urgently referred because of a progressive subconjunctival hemorrhage. Topical treatment with timolol maleate 0.5% once a day was started. After 2 weeks, there was progressive resorption of the hemorrhage with complete clearance after 2 months. Topical treatment was stopped after 6 months and after 1 year of follow-up, there has been no relapse.
ConclusieWe published the first child with BRBNS and a subconjunctival venous malformation and progressive hemorrhage necessitating topical treatment in addition to oral propranolol. For patients with BRBNS-related subconjunctival vascular lesions, treatment with a topical β-blocker may be an efficient and harmless treatment option.
