Titel | Ruthenium brachytherapy in ocular melanoma |
Doel | To evaluate the procedure and technique for ruthenium brachytherapy in ocular melanoma after the introduction of ruthenium in a tertiary center in 2018. First outcome and results after 2 year experience. |
Methodes | Retrospective analysis of our database and review of the literature on ruthenium brachytherapy in ocular melanoma and other malignancies. Three types of ruthenium plaques (CCA, CCB and COB) are available in UZLeuven for different tumour sizes. |
Resultaten | Between February 2018 and September 2019, 54 patients were treated with ruthenium plaque brachytherapy: 40 uveal melanomas, 2 iris melanomas, 1 choroidal hemangioma, 8 conjunctival melanomas and 3 squamous cell carcinomas of the conjunctiva. Application time differs from 6.8 to 226 hours, for a top dose of 100 Gy. In one patient a temporary vitreous haemorrhage occurred after the application (juxtapapillary tumour), 2 large serous detachments (one with development of a painful eye and enucleation), and one recurrence. Three patients with uveal melanoma developed metastases. Two patients had transient diplopia. |
Conclusie | Ruthenium brachytherapy is a good and safe procedure for the treatment of ocular melanomas and other malignancies. |
