Titel | Optical coherence tomography angiography suggests size of the foveal avascular zone to be associated with physical fitness |
Doel | To evaluate if individual physical fitness affects optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) measurements of ocular perfusion. |
Methodes | Sixty-five healthy participants (age 21.7 ± 2.2 years) performed a standardized incremental continuous running test to determine their physical fitness defined as (I) individual anaerobic threshold (IAT, running speed at baseline blood lactate + 1.5 mmol/l) and (II) maximal exercise capacity (maximal running speed, Vmax). Foveal avascular zone size (FAZ) and macular full-thickness flow density (FDM) were evaluated using OCTA, as was FD in the radial peripapillary capillary layer of the peripapillary region (FDrPP), and decorrelation signal index in the choriocapillaris (CCDI). |
Resultaten | An inverse correlation between Vmax and FAZ (r = -0.297, p = 0.018) was detected. FDM, FDrPP and CCDI did not show any correlations with physical fitness parameters. |
Conclusie | OCTA FAZ measurements are associated with individual physical fitness in young healthy adults. |
