TitelOptical coherence tomography angiography suggests size of the foveal avascular zone to be associated with physical fitness
DoelTo evaluate if individual physical fitness affects optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) measurements of ocular perfusion.
MethodesSixty-five healthy participants (age 21.7 ± 2.2 years) performed a standardized incremental continuous running test to determine their physical fitness defined as (I) individual anaerobic threshold (IAT, running speed at baseline blood lactate + 1.5 mmol/l) and (II) maximal exercise capacity (maximal running speed, Vmax). Foveal avascular zone size (FAZ) and macular full-thickness flow density (FDM) were evaluated using OCTA, as was FD in the radial peripapillary capillary layer of the peripapillary region (FDrPP), and decorrelation signal index in the choriocapillaris (CCDI).
ResultatenAn inverse correlation between Vmax and FAZ (r = -0.297, p = 0.018) was detected. FDM, FDrPP and CCDI did not show any correlations with physical fitness parameters.
ConclusieOCTA FAZ measurements are associated with individual physical fitness in young healthy adults.
