TitelLow vision: prescribing glasses in children and adults
Abstract Nr.3028
DoelThe main cause of vision decrease being not refractive, refraction may be often overlooked with low vision patients. Ametropia is nevertheless often a consequence of the underlying visual problem. Is there rules to prescribe glasses with low vision patients?
MethodesDifferent type of glasses are available: unifocal, multifocal, bifocal, high-add glasses and glare filters.
As for other patients, it is crutial to obtain a mesure of the objective refraction for an adequate prescription. However, the correction has to be tested at distances which are specific for each patient in function of his/her daily activities.
ResultatenGlasses prescription may improve visual acuity, patient comfort, patient autonomy in daily life tasks and quality of life in general. With low vision children, correction of ametropia might avoid refractive amblyopia on top of low vision.
ConclusieWhile often forgotten, glasses prescription is an important part of the treatment for low vision patients.
