Doel | To evaluate the clinical signs of diabetic macular edema (DME) in patients with rapid glycemic control (RGC) compared to other patients presenting DME (no RGC). |
Methodes | Retrospective non randomized study of 25 diabetic patients presenting with DME. Color photographs and fluorescein angiographies were reviewed. Spectral domein OCT (HRA) was analyzed with subanalysis of macular thickness and mearements of the inner and outer plexiform layers. |
Resultaten | The mean age of patients was 58.4 y-o in the RGC group and 63.8 y-o in the non RGC group. The mean glycated hemoglobin's value was significantly more important in the RGC group (p<0.00044). The mean foveolar and overall macular thickness were significantly more important in the RGC group (p<0.017 to p<0.038). The central and nasal thickness of the internal plexiform layer were significantly more important in the RGC group (p<0.26). The central thickness of the external plexiform layer was significantly more impotant in the no RGC group (p<0.02). Concerning the presence of subretinal fluid and other fundus clinical signs, there were no statistical differences between the 2 groups but there seems to be more association wtih subretinal fluid in the RGC group and more association with important hard exsudates in the no RGC group. |
Conclusie | Diabetic patients with rapid glycemic control seem to be younger. They have an increased overall macular thickness associated with a more important swelling in the central and nasal internal plexiform layer. |
