Titel | Photodynamic treatment of circumscribed choroidal hemangiomas |
Abstract Nr. | A1009 |
Doel | To evaluate the safety and efficacy of photodynamic therapy (PDT) in the treatment of symptomatic circumscribed choroidal hemangiomas (CCH). |
Methodes | This prospective nonrandomized study included 8 patients referred to us for management of CCH with exudative activity. PDT was applied by diode laser (689nm) with a light dose of 50 J/cm² and using verteporfin (6 mg/m²) IV bolus injection. The treatment spot diameter was related to the tumor basal diameter (TBD). |
Resultaten | The mean tumor thickness before PDT was 3.3 mm and the mean largest TBD was 6.9 mm . All patients were managed with a single PDT application. After a mean follow-up of 12 months, all CCH (100%) showed regression of the vascular tumor mass with a final tumor thickness of 2.3 mm and complete resorption of the serous retinal fluid (SRF). All CCH showed overlying PDT–related RPE atrophic changes. No cases of retinal vascular occlusion or recurrent leakage was documented. Six patients (75%) had visual improvement, one (12.5%) had stable vision and one (12.5%) had worse vision due to chronic exudation-related RPE changes. |
Conclusie | PDT using verteporfin offers a safe and effective option to treat CCH. Complete resorption of the subretinal fluid is associated with visual improvement. |
