Titel | Preserved Visual Acuity in Diabetic Macular Ischaemia |
Doel | To describe three patients with severe diabetic macular ischaemia and bilateral best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) of 6/6. |
Methodes | Two patients with Type 1 diabetes and one patient with Type 2 diabetes treated with insulin were referred for ophthalmological evaluation. Two patients were diagnosed having proliferative disease at presentation, the third patient presented with severe non proliferative diabetic retinopathy. Foveal avascular zone (FAZ) was graded according to Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) grading system. |
Resultaten | The patients were aged between 26 and 45 and suffered diabetes for more then 10 years each. Spectralis optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography (FA) were performed in every patient. FA revealed abnormalities of the FAZ including increased FAZ diameter larger than 1000 µm (range 1536 µm-4004 µm), irregular FAZ margins, severe ETDRS capillary dropout grade, enlargement of the perifoveal intercapillary area and precapillary arteriolar occlusions. |
Conclusie | Severe diabetic macular ischaemia can coexist with good visual acuity and good visual acuity does not necessarily exclude diabetic macular ischaemia. |
