TitleAssessment of intermediate and near vision after bag-in-the-lens cataract surgery.
PurposeTo assess intermediate and near vision after bag in the lens cataract surgery.
MethodsObservational cross-sectional study. A population mean of the Alcon SN60WF was used as the control group.
We included patients who underwent bilateral bag in the lens cataract surgery with the Morcher 89A IOL at least 3 months prior to the follow-up visit. Exclusion criteria were a best corrected distance visual acuity >0.0 logMAR or any ocular pathology which may result in a lower vision. We assessed monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA/CDVA) at 4 meters, monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA/DCIVA) at 66 centimeters and monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected near visual acuity (UNVA/DCNVA) at 40 centimeters. We performed a monocular defocus curve and tested the binocular photopic visual contrast sensitivity and reading speed at intermediate distance. Subjective visual functioning was tested by the NEI VFQ-25 and PRSIQ questionnaires.
ResultsA total of fifteen patients, (30 eyes) were included in this study. The mean monocular DCIVA and DCNVA were 0.265 and 0.555 LogMAR, respectively, in the Morcher 89A group compared to 0.300 and 0.513 LogMAR, respectively,in the SN60WF group (P values 0.162 and 0.112 respectively).
ConclusionNo significant differences were observed between the Morcher 89A and Alcon SN60WF IOLs in terms of DCIVA, and DCNVA outcomes. However, the Morcher 89A IOL demonstrated excellent subjective visual performance, particularly at intermediate distances, offering patients useful visual function without the need for spectacles.
