TitleAn evaluation of diabetic retinopathy screening procedure using a non mydriatic camera
Abstract Nr.1023
PurposeTo evaluate the potential efficacy of the diabetic retinopathy (DR) screening procedure with an eye fundus (EF) photography.
MethodsEF photography was performed by nurses in 245 diabetic patients using a non mydriatic camera in the screening center located in the RML Liège. Pictures were transmitted through the internet to our ophthalmologic center, together with a primary reading. In the ophthalmic center, the primary reading was compared with reading by ophthalmologists in double-blind. The general practitioner was informed of the results of the exam. The patient inclusion criteria were male or female at least 18 years old, with diabetes of type 2.
ResultsWe observed in our series 145 patients with normal fundus (59.18%) and 74 patients with pathologic fundus (30.2%) among whom we found 20 patients with DR (20%). The pictures were of poor quality and uninterpretable in 26 patients (10.61%). The concordance rate between the two readings was 77.14%. The results showed an improvement with time of the learning curve for the interpretation of the EF photography by the nurses and for the quality of the images.
ConclusionThe results of this study showed the efficacy of the DR screening. This procedure could improve the awareness of the patients and physician about DR. Obviously, the patient must be informed that the screening doesn’t replace a complete examination.
