TitleThe vitreopapillary interface in healthy and glaucoma: evolution of posterior vitreous detachment in the VPI study.
Abstract Nr.1046
PurposeTo investigate the vitreopapillary interface (VPI) in healthy and glaucoma according to the different stages of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) formation.
MethodsSingle center cross-sectional case-control study including healthy subjects and glaucoma patients. Posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) stage was assessed with spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). Glaucoma patients additionally had a comprehensive ophthalmological investigation including measurement of visual acuity, intraocular pressure, refractive status and automated perimetry.
ResultsData on 582 subjects (1091 eyes) was included in this study (493 eyes of 258 healthy subjects and 598 eyes of 324 glaucoma patients). For every PVD stage, glaucoma patients were significantly older than their healthy counterparts (PVD stage 0: 49.6 (±13.7) vs 57.52 (±8.9), stage 1: 54.6 (±13.9) vs 65.3 (±8.3), stage 3: 67.7 (±5.9) vs 73.3 (±8.1) and stage 4: 71.4 (±9.4) vs 74.9 (±9.4) years, respectively). Defining the eye with the highest PVD stage as index eye, the majority of the study subjects (72.4%) shows the same PVD stage in the contralateral eye.
ConclusionThe VPI study is a large clinical trial investigating the vitreopapillary interface in healthy and glaucoma. Glaucoma patients experience all stages of PVD formation at an older age in respect to healthy subjects.
